IKEA’s Boaxel system seems to be sold out in multiple locations across the country, which may be related to COVID-19. We are investigating other options and will update the guide as soon as we learn more.

We have also read through and updated this guide, which contains some products we are interested in testing and some long-term testing instructions.

Keeping cluttered closets in order can make daily life smoother-helping you find what you need, use what you have, and save preparation time. To help you control a closet of any size, we asked five experts for their best tips and tricks, and we spent 42 hours researching and testing the closet equipment. We advise on everything from space-saving hangers to complete closet systems to help you find neat happiness.

In this guide, we spoke with five family organization experts to learn their insights on how to best organize a messy or cluttered closet: Julie Morgenstern, organizer and author of Organize From the Inside; Sharon Lowenheim, professional organizer and founder of Organizing Goddess; Debbie Harwin, professional organizer and owner/president of I Need My Space; Beth Penn, founder of Bneato Bar; and Tony Hammers in "A Bowl of Lemons" Lee (Toni Hammersley).

We researched hundreds of sorting tools sold through Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, The Container Store, IKEA, Target, and other retailers. We reviewed the reviews carefully and made some choices based on these. Jackie Reeve spent 11 hours evaluating the closet systems installed in the store, and then tested our seasonal storage items in her own home. Alex Arpaia used a small closet in her apartment in New York City to test our storage maximization accessories.

The first step in creating an efficient and organized closet is to take stock of the contents and throw away anything you don’t like or use often. You don’t need to cut your wardrobe drastically, but try not to let items you’ve never used take up valuable wardrobe space. If there is something inappropriate, donate it. Our experts also provide the following tips for organizing closets of any size:

The streamlined accessories in this section are designed to squeeze more space out of closet bars, shelves, drawers and floors. For most people who want a small wardrobe, it only takes a few of these suggestions and a few hours.

To help you store large items and make the most of vertical space, these sturdy hanging cabinets have the most stable hooks we have found.

Most of our experts warn against using fabric hanging organizers and point out that they tend to sag and accumulate dust. In general, we agree, but since they are a common, fast, and affordable way to add storage space to a compact closet, we researched 14 and tested three promising options. We think The Container Store’s 6-compartment canvas hanger can be used to store sheets or organize folded clothes. It is well-made, and the small deep and wide room can even hold a shoe box.

The six-shelf version of this Container Store organizer is 50 inches long, so it can almost touch your floor, depending on the height of the closet pole. Its compartment should easily accommodate sweaters, and it can be used to store folded sheets and towels. The hooks of this storage rack are more stable than those of the competition: the wide base of the triangular hooks helps prevent the rack from tilting forward or backward when the internal weight is unevenly distributed. Although we like the size and shelf of this storage box, we found that the beige cotton canvas is a bit thin, but we still believe in its durability. As of March 2021, our editor-in-chief has been testing the hanging organizer for a little over 2 years, and it is as strong as ever. If you don't need much space, Container Store also sells smaller three-compartment options.

We also tested StorageWorks and Simple Houseware organizers, both of which are popular on Amazon, but their shelves are very fragile and can easily be folded in half during testing, making them useless. Both organizers are made of a cheap-feeling microfiber fabric that is rough and rough.

This extender is the only one that we believe has successfully provided us with more free space. It is also the easiest to adjust, so it can accommodate any closet.

The closet rod extender is a useful addition to any closet where you want to maximize vertical hanging space: a second closet rod hangs under the built-in rod, doubling the number of items you can hang. In theory, they should be easy to set up and use. In fact, most pole extenders are rubbish. We considered eight rods and tested three: the closet maid double hanging closet rod, the DecoBros adjustable hanging closet rod and the Umbra Dublet adjustable closet rod extender. Of the three we tested, the ClosetMaid rod was the only rod we didn't immediately regret buying. It can be easily adjusted in many ways, and unlike most other products we have seen, it is pre-assembled.

The ClosetMaid rod is made of powder-coated steel, mainly because its durable and easily adjustable nylon strap can be attached to your existing closet rod, regardless of its diameter. You can adjust the suspension rod to any height (approximately 20 inches to 37 inches from below the top rod) by sliding the clip up or down, so it is suitable for everything from children's clothing to adult shirts.

The structure of ClosetMaid is more versatile than the extender we tested from DecoBros. DecoBros has a certain number of slots, which limits the adjustment of length and width. The DecoBros model is also difficult to assemble and is too small-it does not extend far enough under a row of men's shirts to allow them to hang freely. In the end, we tried Umbra's double hanging rod, but couldn't test it at all because the two-piece rod fell apart, as some of their negative reviews pointed out.

These slender velvet flocking hangers are the most space-saving and customizable option we have found.

Our experts agree that the most effective way to maximize space in any closet is to use elongated clothes hangers. By allowing more space for everything, the slim hangers also help prevent the clothes from wrinkling and wrinkling during storage. Among the eight hanger styles we considered, according to our test, the ultra-thin Joy Mangano Huggable hanger is the best. They are more customizable than other products and can be used as basic shirt hangers and suit versions, with a crossbar at the bottom for draped pants. An additional flocking shoulder shaper prevents hangers from poking at the shoulders of jackets and sweaters, and there is also a hanger option for placing your waistband and tie, which are equally slim.

Alex used the Mangano hangers in her wardrobe for three years and found that they were stronger and better quality than other slim velvet flocking hangers she had tried. She especially likes the gentle slope of the hanger to prevent the shirt shoulders from wrinkling. The size of these hangers fits most clothing bags and is easy to pack for travel. Online reviews are also very positive. Many people say that Mangano hangers save space and are better than competitors in preventing clothes from falling off.

We also like the Studio 3B Slim Grips hanger, if you are hesitant about the velvety coating, this is a better choice. They have metal hooks and a plastic body with built-in handles, so the shirt will not slide around, and because they are waterproof, they will work well if you want to dry your clothes.

These hangers are slim to maximize the use of space. However, they have a simple, open design that makes them easy to put on and take off their pants.

If you prefer a special hanger for pants that can be easily hung and removed, we will like Chrome Metal Pant Hangers from The Container Store. They have a PVC non-slip coating to hold your pants in place, but it's still easy to put on and take off your clothes. If you prefer styles without velvet coating (such as Joy Mangano hangers), this is a good choice. The slim shape and simple design should match other shirts or suit hangers perfectly to make your wardrobe look neat and tidy. But keep in mind that unlike the larger and heavier hanger bar design, the thinner bar may cause some creases.

These hangers are slender and the PVC coating is very grippy, but it is still easy to put on and take off the pants on the bar. Unlike other hangers we have tested, these hangers do not leave residue on clothes. Hanging trousers in the closet can free up space for the dressing table, and the wrinkles of the clothes will be significantly reduced.

These partitions are stable and thin, and are the best partitions we have tested, allowing you to easily keep your stacked sheets, sweaters or bags in order. They are suitable for shelves up to 3/4 inch thick.

Shelf dividers are great for tidying up piles of clothes or sheets, and keeping bags separate and upright. Compared with storage boxes, they take up less space and make everything clearly visible, which is highly encouraged by our experts. After considering 12 and Test 5, we like Lynk elevated partitions because they have the best design, are made of thick-gauge coated steel, and are the strongest we have found. Due to the slim profile, these shelf dividers do not take up any additional space.

When we clamp the Lynk partitions to our shelf, they are easy to stand upright without any adjustments. Many of the other options we tried proved to be unstable and weak. But the Lynk partition feels safer on the shelf, and the metal version is much stronger than the acrylic version. A long-time tester of an employee who has had Lynk partitions for many years reported that these partitions have been kept well and kept their wardrobes "calm and orderly." If you paint the shelf, the tester recommends that you take extra care when removing the partition from the shelf to prevent the paint from chipping due to friction. These partitions are suitable for the thickest 3/4 inch shelf; if your shelf is thicker, please use the Clear Shelf Divider of The Container Store below.

This is the best solid partition we have tried. It fits shelves from ¾ inches to 1½ inches, and has a hook for hanging items in front of the shelf.

For thicker shelves, we recommend using The Container Store's Clear Shelf Divider. In our test, it slips easily onto a 1-inch thick shelf. Although it doesn't feel as stable as the Lynk partition, it is much better than competing acrylic partitions. It is compatible with Elfa shelves and can also be purchased at The Container Store. The close-fitting hook on the front of the storage box is a good place to hang handbags, tomorrow's clothes or other things you want to put in the closet at any time.

We also tested Cq acrylic and StorageAid's transparent acrylic partitions, but both felt very fragile, and we think our other options (especially Lynk partitions) will last longer.

Compared to any other partitions we have tried, these partitions are simpler to use and can maximize the drawer space while keeping the socks and underwear in order.

Separating the drawer from the organizer can help keep your folded clothes in order, or keep your socks and underwear from getting messed up. After researching 15 sets and testing four sets of drawer organizers, we recommend Dial's Dream Drawer Organizer. Compared with competitors, they take up less space, are stronger, and are easier to adjust. These are the only drawer organizers we have seen, which include vertical and horizontal subdivision drawer components, which is a feature we like.

Dream Drawer Organizer uses a spring-loaded mechanism to adjust to fit drawers 12 to 18 inches long and at least 4 inches deep. They also have smaller dividers connected vertically to further subdivide the space. The wide support panels at both ends help the Dream Drawer divider to be fixed in place without taking up too much drawer space. If you need to rearrange them, they can slide in and out easily. They also use space more efficiently than the box organizers we have tried, providing us with multiple ways to use every inch of our drawers.

This eight-hook rack is one of the best compact options we have found and can be used to neatly line up ties, necklaces or other small accessories.

We considered a series of hooks for organizing ties, belts, scarves and necklaces in a small space. The InterDesign Axis 8 hook wall rack is the best. It is well-structured, each hook is deep enough to hold multiple items, but the space is far enough so that small accessories should not be crowded. If you are looking for an effective way to handle the clutter inside and outside the closet, this hook rack is only 18¼ inches wide and is a good choice. An owner mentioned in a comment on The Container Store website that the anchors that come with this shelf are not the best; if you find that the pre-packaged options are not satisfactory or there are no studs in your closet, we recommend these drywall anchors.

This hook rack is our favorite, it can take advantage of the lost space on the back of the closet door. Use it to store large items such as robes or towels.

*At the time of publication, the price was $45.

To store towels, robes and other items on the back of the door, we like Spectrum Duchess Over the Door 5-Hook Rack. This hanger has a strong structure, and each hook has a large oval-shaped piece at the end, which can hold the clothes firmly in place. Smooth metal will not damage delicate fabrics. When we tested this rack as a guide for our small apartment equipment, we found that it was easy to hang on the 1½-inch thick door of our tester, with a ¼-inch overhang; it shook a little but did not Did not annoy her. Some online commenters complain that the bracket makes the door difficult to close, but depending on the gap between the door and the frame, this can happen with any door on the shelf. Since 2015, we have also been conducting long-term testing of this rack, and it has been in good condition.

What to expect: Soon we will test Yamazaki Home's Over the Door Hook and Smart Overdoor Hanger and Umbra's Estique Over the Door Organizer.

This rack succeeded in most places where it failed: it was assembled in a few minutes, there was enough space, it remained swing-free, and it was easier to customize than any other rack we found.

*At the time of publication, the price was $27.

Our experts tell us that shoes are one of the biggest culprits of clutter in the closet-people usually have too many pairs of shoes, but not enough storage space for them. After 30 hours of shoe rack research and 15 hours of testing, we believe that the Seville Classics 3-layer resin slat practical shoe rack is the most suitable for small closets that need to maximize floor space. This is the most stable free-standing rack we have tried, but it can be assembled quickly and without tools. Simply fold open the steel frame and click the shelf into place.

Seville has more pairs than many racks we considered, and it is easier to customize. You can easily stack two or more racks vertically or connect them horizontally, and the detachable shelf means it can hold taller boots that other racks cannot manage. No other model we tested has simply put so many different sizes and styles of shoes together like this. For more ideas on organizing your shoes, see our complete guide to shoe racks.

In closets that require structure, adding a system (whether installed or modular) is a game-changing way to use vertical space, eliminate clutter, and place more items. Professional organizer Toni Hammersley told us that any type of storage is better than nothing. If you don't have a budget, there is no need to overspend. "There are cheap systems on the market," she said. If you don't want to permanently fix the system to the wall, even bookshelves can help you put trash cans and containers.

Although we did not bring the closet system for testing, we did spend about 11 hours researching them online and in stores. We pay attention to the quality of the materials, the structure (close range), how they are installed, availability, any additional accessories and prices. All our options (except for IKEA's new Boaxel system) are also used by Wirecutter staff, so we can get feedback on their work and long-term persistence.

If your budget is limited, the system allows you to start small and build gradually. It does a better job than the wire system we have seen in other large stores, and there are many components that can be mixed and matched.

May be out of stock

Among the closet systems we have considered, the Boaxel closet system from IKEA has the best combination of easy customization, low price and usability. (As of March 2021, the Boaxel closet system is out of stock in most stores across the country. We are looking for alternatives. Before heading to an IKEA store, it’s best to check the "Check store inventory" tool on the product page. You don’t have to take a frustrating trip.) It is an alternative to IKEA’s popular Algot system, and our previous choice was discontinued in 2020. Due to the pandemic, we have been unable to test Boaxel in person (but we plan to To). We did visit the IKEA store and took a closer look at the new system. It seems to be as functional and customizable as Algot. There are many similar add-ons available, such as trouser racks, drying racks and shoe cabinets, although Boaxel The system has only one shelf depth, and Algot has two. If you want to extend the existing Algot settings, these systems are very similar, but they are not compatible with each other. Unlike the Algot system, which is popular among several of our employees, We don’t have a lot of comments and feedback on Boaxel yet, although this Reddit post is very helpful. We still think that the Boaxel system will meet many of the same needs as Algot. The Boaxel system has its own basket, but it also means the new Jonaxel basket Combine with the frame series to add more modular storage options. (As of this writing, many Jonaxel products are out of stock in many countries, so make sure to check availability before heading to IKEA.) So you can use it Use as a drawer/trolley system in a closet, or use a home for wall shelf storage around you. If your closet is too dark, one of our senior editors suggested adding Norrfly LED strips for additional lighting.

The Boaxel system is slightly more expensive than Algot-this basic 4-foot-wide kit is about $20 more expensive, which is similar to the Algot system we recommended in the past. But we have also considered wire cabinet systems from large stores such as Lowe's and Home Depot, such as this Rubbermaid Fast Track kit, and the price is about the same. The Boaxel system is equipped with baskets, rods and shelves instead of shelves alone. The structure and materials are also better. We have several wire systems from brands such as ClosetMaid and Rubbermaid. The metal edges are not so smooth; Jackie was cut by them more than once during the installation process.

In our initial testing of this guide, we hope to find a reasonably priced and widely available option, and we found that IKEA is the best brand for DIY closet systems, if you think you want to expand it further. The ClosetMaid and Rubbermaid systems are really good Hard to buy; each brand offers several different systems, which seem to be interchangeable but not necessarily compatible. Some are only sold in stores, and some are only sold online, and it is difficult to judge whether they can work together before you take them home. Unless you write down your exact purchase location and model name (and it is still available), you may find that the components you want to add are not suitable. IKEA's Boaxel and Jonaxel series can be purchased in-store and online, and they will always work together. One of our senior writers bought a ClosetMaid system to organize his storage room and said it was messy to install. We have not heard the same complaint about the IKEA system.

If the IKEA Boaxel system is not for you, the next best option we found is the ClosetMaid ShelfTrack system. The ShelfTrack series is more usable than other systems we have seen, the white wire frame looks more uniform, and the owner’s comments indicate that additional components are easier to find. After checking several models in the store, we prefer the ClosetMaid system to the Rubbermaid system-they look better constructed and seem to have more options. Nevertheless, we found that the ClosetMaid system lacks the quality and configurability of the IKEA system.

This is the strongest and most attractive closet system we have seen, with beautiful finishes and many additional options. But it is very expensive.

We like The Container Store's Elfa closet system because of its high-quality materials, high-end appearance, versatility, and easy-to-use online design tools from The Container Store. The shelves feel stronger than our other options, the edges of the brackets and rails look more refined, and the drawers slide more smoothly. In addition, the wooden parts we looked at had no obvious dents or scratches, which we noticed on almost every large store closet system we saw. The Elfa system will continue to be used: Our employees have used Elfa for many years (more than 15 years in one case), and it still looks almost brand new.

In-store consultants can help you design a closet, but The Container Store's online design tool is very interesting-it is more intuitive, easier to use, and offers more customization options than IKEA's online designers. You can purchase the components and install them yourself, or pay an additional installation fee (starting at $180).

Although we like Elfa, it is expensive. A basic 3-foot-wide wire rack system usually costs more than US$550 and is truly ahead of our other options for closet systems with wooden components, starting at close to US$1,000. In our research, we found that Elfa is still simpler and may be cheaper than a custom closet system, just like buying a car-if you don’t talk to a salesperson, it’s hard to find the real price, and they will be based on where you live The place and what is available. The Elfa system is easier to price and purchase. However, in order to maximize the value of your funds, we believe that it only makes sense to invest in the Elfa system when you plan to live in your own space for at least five years.

This stackable shelf and cubicle system is the best way to add a lot of storage space to your closet without having to punch holes in the wall.

May be out of stock

If you want a modular system for small rooms and shelves that don’t require drilling on the wall, we like ClosetMaid’s stackable storage managers because they are of better quality and are better than other modular systems we consider Many available parts. They are easier to find in stores, and the parts are strong (although not as polished as the other systems we recommend). However, they are easily confused with ClosetMaid's Cubeicals, and we have not tested the system to see if the two are compatible with each other. The system includes shoe cabinets, drawers and shelves, as well as various small cabinet units that you can mix and match to get the settings you need. However, it does not include closet bars, so you may want to keep your existing closet bars and use these separate pieces to maximize floor space.

ClosetMaid's stackable system is easily available on Home Depot, Lowe's, Staples and Target. If you want to find a specific item in the store, each item on the company's website has a "Buy Location" button; We think it's fairly easy to list the components we need and source them in this way. We also believe that this stackable system is easy to expand if you need to add components, especially since the production line has been in existence for several years and has not changed. What is available now may still be available in a year or two.

Jackie has used an old version of the same system in her own wardrobe and sewing studio for 11 years. Although laminated particleboard is not as strong as Elfa shelves and drawers, the system is really durable and can get the job done.

If you are willing to DIY, the IKEA Pax wardrobe offers some interesting opportunities to create built-in plug-ins for your wardrobe. Technically, Pax is a closet independent of the outside of the closet, but we have seen some good examples where people invade the unit to create more functional closets. Some of our readers recommend this option as an alternative to the installed system. Setting up the wardrobe in the closet requires some extra work, but if done well, Pax hack can look very clean and streamlined. Owners’ comments are generally strong; people say they like the height of the wardrobe and the number of configurable options inside. We also talked to Wirecutter employees who use and love Pax.

What to expect: Soon we will test Kepsuul, an independent closet organization system that is sold directly to consumers online through Lowe's, Home Depot, Amazon and Wayfair.

These bins and bags can keep your summer clothes or winter bedding in order and tidy up until you need them. By using tightly sealed under-bed storage space, you can free up closet space while protecting valuables from moisture, moths and dust.

The sturdy structure and better materials make this compact and versatile trash can an advantage over the competition.

Affordable and airtight, the reliable under-bed bin is shallow enough to be stored under the bed to maximize storage space. Among the 12 under-bed bins we researched and the five bins we tested, we think The Container Store's 41-Qt Clear Weathertight Tote is the best. It is made of thicker plastic and the lid is stronger. The six latches located around the entire bin (not just at the end, just like other bins) ensure that the lid is firmly secured. This is the only bin we tested that convinced us that it can prevent moths or water from infiltrating (although we did not specifically test for these conditions). One of our editors used Clear Weathertight Totes to conduct a transnational operation to protect items she didn't trust to haul in cardboard boxes, and these bins worked very well.

We tested the size of 41 quarts at 8 inches high, which is the largest transparent weatherproof handbag that can fit under most beds (8 inches high, it needs a gap of at least 8 ½ inches to enter it smoothly). But there are also smaller 19-quart and 30-quart sizes (both the same 8 inch height). The 41-quart tote bag is small for a box under the bed, but its size makes it easy to carry when full, and it can slide out of the bed with a gap of 9 inches. These bins are 8 inches tall, which is higher than other bins we have tried, but the extra height provides more space for larger blankets and coats. Using a larger under-bed bin in a cramped bedroom can be unruly-the largest bin we tested is about 5 inches wider than a double bed, so the exposed sides are prone to tripping. We believe that the larger case is not as easy to use as the smaller Clear Weathertight Tote. For closet storage, The Container Store offers several larger and deeper transparent weatherproof tote bags. We also recommend some other options in our storage container guide.

We found that these blanket bags are the easiest and most sturdy way to place bulky bedding. They are also very suitable for keeping a large number of plush toys dust-free.

*At the time of publication, the price was $20.

The blanket bag can protect your bedding from dust and damage during storage. Compared with vacuum-sealed space bags, these bags have less trouble opening and closing, and their size is larger than many rigid storage boxes we have seen, so they can easily accommodate larger bedding. We researched 12 bags and tested two. Our favorite is the Misslo foldable and breathable giant storage bag.

The Misslo bag is the easiest bag to fit in an extra-large quilt due to the opening of the three-sided zipper on the top. These bags are made of thicker material so that they can stand up on their own, and they have a strong zipper. In our tests, we were able to unfold, decompress and fill Misslo bags in a shorter time than The Container Store's natural cotton/PEVA storage bags. Jackie has been testing the Misslo bag for a long time for three summers to store her winter bedding during the off-season, and they still look new. When she suddenly needs to grab a blanket on a cold night, she can easily access their content.

A set of two Misslo bags includes two sizes. We tested a larger bag (28 x 20½ x 15¾ inches) with our most bulky bedding, but there was still room for a duvet and some sheets. We think the smaller bag (24½ x 18 x 12½ inches) is suitable for seasonal children’s bedding and guest bedding.

These bags can compress quickly and reduce more volume than the other bags we tested.

Although we usually prefer plastic boxes or blanket bags to store clothes and bedding, if your storage space is tight, a vacuum bag may be a good choice. After studying 18 vacuum bags and testing three, we recommend SpaceSaver vacuum storage bags. They shrink more and faster, look better, and hold the seal better than others.

We tested an oversized bag of 30 x 40 inches, which can hold a large quilt or several pillows. Compared to the Vacwel Jumbo vacuum storage bags of similar dimensions (30 x 43 inches) we tested, they shrink faster and look flatter. We used fluffy bedding, pillows and clothes to pack the two bags to the same height, while the SpaceSaver bag was compressed by more than 60%; the Vacwel bag was only compressed by about 50% (in our tests, none of them reached their advertised 75% to 80% compression rate). We reused all the tested bags and compressed them back to roughly the same size. Since our initial testing, we have used SpaceSaver bags in cross-country movements and packed several boxes for shipping, and they have been re-used four or five times to keep them sealed.

Since 2018, Jackie has been using these bags to ship test bedding across the country for photography, donation, or return to the company. She has never received complaints about the products being dirty, wet, or otherwise damaged when they arrive. She also used them for cross-country mobility and reported that although they were generally good, some of the bags lost their vacuum seal after several months of storage. She stores the compressed and sealed bags in a plastic box, and we recommend that you do the same, because almost all vacuum bags will eventually lose their seal.

These smaller bags do not require a vacuum, so they are easier to use in small storage areas, travel or mobile boxes.

*At the time of publication, the price was $17.

Of the three compression bags we tested, Acrodo's Space Saver compression bag is the easiest to use-you don't need to draw a vacuum, just push the air out and seal it. They compressed it by about 50% and maintained this compression in our 24-hour test. They are shrunk enough to create extra space for storage boxes and protect clothes from natural disasters in a short period of time, and we can easily reuse and reseal them.

We tested the smaller size, it is easier to compress-the fuller the bag, the harder it is to roll up. Therefore, unlike SpaceSaver bags, these bags are not a good choice for storing large bedding.
